Painful lump under right breast

Hey all...about two weeks ago I started having this painful swelling under my right breast. Now there is a lump there just under the nipple that hurts when I press on it. At first it was small and hard but now the lump seems larger. What do you think? I'm starting to freak out a little just because I don't want it to be a tumor or breast cancer. I'm a guy by the way so I'm posting in men's health.

    • im 17 and have had lumps under both nipples for about 2 years.. my cousin has the same thing.. doctor says its gynecomastia

      gynecomastia is prsent in about 1/3 of all males and can occur in 1 or both breasts, usually it will go away in 2-3 years they say

    • Gynecomastia is caused by a hormone imbalance. Usually the testosterone is to low or the estrogen is too high. Sometimes it is both. It is usually not a health concern, just a cosmetic problem.

      For millions of men it is breasts for life. Look around at the beach, pool, & the malls.

    • Dear INtrepid Man: In 2001, I was diagnosed with gynecomastia of the right breast. I had a friend who is a wonderful surgeon and he removed and biopsied and it was fine. There is, of course, no way of knowing if it is pre-cancerous without the biopsy but it is true that, in men, breast cancer occurs in less than three per cent of the cases. A week ago, the same thing developed on my left breast. Again...had a mammogram adn an ultrasound. (no, it was not fun. Mostly embarassing.) I went to another surgeon becuase my friend has moved to bfe North Carolina. And, what do you know, same thing. However, this time, we're going to watch it for three months, have another mammogram at that time and unless there are changes I think I've leave it alone. However, it is noticeable to me, slightly painful when I press on it and, being a hypochodriac, am convinced it is the size of an Edsel. chris

    • When you go to a surgeon for advice guess what advice you get, surgery!

      Get the hormones balanced as the first step & it may save you $7000.00 per surgery. Some guys have had they removed 2 or 3 times at $4k to $7k per trip.

      I just kept mine & enjoyed them. I got the hormones balanced to stop further growth, testosterone up in upper half of "normal" range & estradiol down in lower half of "normal" range. I am 40-C on one side & 40-B on the other. They are very sexually sensitive.

    • Dear JinK: well, not to be argumentative, but the first that happens when you take your car in is that you get a big bill. If you are your own advocate and maintain open relationship with your physician and only partner with the doctor about your health then you remain in charge. A surgeon can operate unless you grant permission. Oh, abot the hormones, great idea but, oh yeh, who going to tell you which ones are out of whack and which hormones you are to take. And, I'm super impressed that you find them "sexually sensitive". However, if they are precancerous, then cancer surgery and follow-up treatments must send you into gails of orgasms just thinking about it!

    • I go to am endocronoligst every 6 months for a hormone checkup. I get a yearly mammogram. It took me 5 doctors to find one that understood male hormones & what was causing my breast growth. I use a compounded testosterone gel to get my testosterone levels up & a pill to keep the estrogen down.

      I was born with Klinefelters Mosaic. This occurs in about 1 in 500 births, but not many are aware of it until later in life when things are not exactly like other guys or the wife can not get pregnant.

      I have extra female chromosomes in my upper body, 47xy/xxy. My body naturally makes low testosterone & high estrogen. Little to no facial or upper body hair, Small testicles, large breasts, but normal penis with a few active sperm being produced.

      No it does not. My wife had cancer after our second son was born, they took out her uterus. It does not give me "gails of orgasms" to think of me having it.

      Yes, the breasts are sexually sensitive just like a females. Many men are like that.

      No, I have never considered a breast removal surgery, even if it was free.

    • oops, didn't mean to misinform: it not breast removal but only the removal of the lump that has formed behind the nipple for purposes of determining if that particular nodule involves pre-cancerous cells or cancer cells.

      DO make an appointment and get this checked out.

      Any lumps that are where they do not belong, or change should

      be checked out by your physican. It may be nothing, or it may be something

      that needs attention. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

    • Is there amy other information you could give us? How old are you? Are there any other symptoms you're experiencing? Have you taken any hormones like testosterone or its derivatives?

    • I am 23 years old. I am not overweight but actually quite skinny. The lump is not big and not noticeable unless you touch the nipple, which causes pain. It seems to have gotten slightly smaller these past two days or so but I'm not sure. It's been there about three weeks. I don't take any hormones or medication of any kind, although these past few weeks have been stressful. To be honest I'm very worried that if might be cancerous or somehow related to cancer. I tend to worry about these kinds of things. I'm right in the middle of moving across country to start a new job so don't have much time to go see a doctor. But if it doesn't go away soon then I definitely will.

    • INtrepid - When I had the first ultrasound the tech said that "these things" are usually caused by steroids or marijuna use. I think he was talking out his butt, but becuase I am thin, weight about 150 and am 5'7" I asked him if he really thougth this was the body of a steroid used. And, no to the marijuana as well. Get it looked at and ease your mind..chris
